Vote! Design Many Robots Finalists

After reviewing hundreds of submissions from our forums and from PAX East, we narrowed down our favorites to 5 finalists. It was a tough process since there were tons of awesome, creative designs. The winning design will appear in game in our first expansion pack for Shoot Many Robots. The winner will also get a tshirt, and a free trip to Boston to help us bring their design to life!

Congrats to the finalists! Check out the robots, and be sure to click the full sizes, as many have more details in the full view. Vote at the bottom of this article!

#1: Gnash Britches
Designed by: James Mosingo
A boxy robot with a fierce temper. When spotting an enemy his engine starts up, then he is propelled towards said enemy; all while his teeth mash independently. If he reaches an enemy, Gnash bites quickly then latches onto the player’s leg.

#2: JOTN4R
Designed by: Lane Garrison
The name of this creation is “J0TN4R” a take on “Jotnar” the giants found in Norse mythology and adopted by many Scandinavian tales as “Trolls.” Towering over the player, this robot’s weak spot is his dangly “appendage.”

#3: Trikey
Designed by: Igor Sobolevsky
Don’t be fooled by his cute face! Trikey is a tough, heavily-armored robot who refuses to give up without a fight. From a distance, Trikey will fill you up with lead using his revolver style machine gun. However, if you dare to get close, beware of his heavily armored wheel (high probability of getting crushed).

Trikey is also a natural born leader, tending to command packs of tankbots as a secondary attack. While powering up for his concealed attack, Trikey is known to rise up on his hind legs, allowing the pack of tankbots to run underneath towards an unsuspecting player, as indicated in the diagram. When the player finally get’s an upper hand, Trikey will resort to his concealed mortar launcher. Although he carries only one charge, he is able to deliver a “botload” of damage to unsuspecting tutu wearing, beer drinking players.

#4: K.R.I.B.
Designed by: Alex Tisdale
K.R.I.B. or Killer Robot Iron Biters live inside of these walking iron cribs. Resembling a snapping bear trap, Iron Biters bounce around on the ground nibbling at enemies’ feet until they can find something metallic to snack on.  If there are guns or ammo on the ground, it is a safe bet that Iron Biters will get to it before you will.  However, kill the crib and you kill the source.

#5: Chopter
Designed by: James Sloss
A flying, chopping, helicopter-ish, birdy robot. It flys around using its blades and rocket-assist booster. It will hover then charge with its spinning blades. Watch your head!

Voting Closed! We’ll officially announce the winner May 23!

Note: We experienced technical difficulties with the first voting system we posted, and were forced to take it down and replace it with a new system (Murphy’s Law, eh?). Those votes were recorded during the designated voting period, so they will be counted. Both poll totals will be added together to determine the winner. We apologize for any confusion this causes.

Vote Gnash Britches!  Way more practical and realistic, not to mention simple.

Screw Trikey!  Gnash Britches all he way!  Besides, from a style standpoint Gnash fits better into the overall scheme.

How is Trikey winning?! Gnash fits PERFECTLY in the SMR world.

What’s going on? Gnash Britches was way ahead before the voting hiccup earlier. Now he’s in second? I smell shenanigans.

Double Bit

Honestly, it’s just good competition! I think Trikey would make an excellent boss, while Gnash is a great minion and both seem very thought out and well designed. Stop being dramatic and stop bashing. Just vote and support!

Don’t be a wiener, Double Bit. Bashing is part of competitions. I doubt the artists will care what we say. For what it matters, I like Trikey. But you’ve got to admit, it doesn’t fit the same art style as Shoot Many Robots.

Gnash all the way. Trikey, although nicely rendered, we’ve all seen before. Gnash has the humour and unique design that fit this the best.

Gnash is a great concept but I think Demiurge is having the contest to see something new for the game.

The Fonz

Apr 27 2011

Jason, if Demiurge is looking for something new, then Trikey shouldn’t be winning. As well as it’s drawn, it’s not very original. At least the others have personality, which SMR is full of.

I think Gnash Britches is the best robot here… its design fits well to the personality of the game and you can’t beat that name.  Trikey is currently 1st in voting and I’m trying to figure out why b/c ... now while I think Trikey is also a great design, it just doesn’t seem to match up with the light hearted feel of Shoot Many Robots.
Best of luck to all.

I’ve gotta vote for Gnash.  Reminds me of a robotic bulldog and I’ve got a soft spot for bulldogs.  It’s also the most light hearted of the characters which makes me think that it fits the game better.

And Gnash takes the lead!!! Let’s keep it going!

Bridget

Apr 30 2011

No, vote Trikey! Even though Gnash’s function is unique, it’s silhouette and design is a little too similar to the game’s current Tankbot (compact and boxy) and each robot in the game should have it’s own different attack AND look! Plus, it’s not everyday that you can shoot a tricycle robot.

Jason Carrey

I agree with Bridget, vote For Trikey. Awesome boss

Gnash feels right and makes me want to shoot it.

Jessica

May 02 2011

Way to make it super awkward Duck Todd.

A vote for Gnash is a vote for America! Igor is a commie!

Brian

May 02 2011

Gnash’s design isn’t functional and remains too similar to the rest of the game’s robots, there needs to be variety. this way each robot is recognizable by it’s unique form.

trikey must win. suck it gnash.

Nerdomatick

May 02 2011

Trikey’s design is functional but sci-fi typical and it remains too different from the aesthetic precedence that’s been set, there needs to be visual continuity. This way there isn’t an odd design that makes player’s scratch their head as to why it’s there.

Gnash must win! Suck it Trikey.

Oh… trikey is neat… but he looks like a silver dildo with tracks :/

Bob

May 02 2011

There’s nothing original about Trikey. He looks like a rejected ED-209. Ooooh he’s got a pincer, ooooh he’s got a gatling gun, ooooh, if I vote for him I must have brain damage.

Ronnie

May 02 2011

I read online that if you vote for Trikey, you get AIDS.

B. Obama

I’m Barack Obama, and I approve of Gnash Britches.

Jason Carrey

May 02 2011

Trikey was an essential tool in successful termination of Bin Laden according to CNN.com

That’s true. Trikey was a member of the Taliban and we tracked him to Osama’s cave. He was successfully ‘taken care of’ during the insurgency.

Wow I see all your crass and immature comments have gained gnash bridges so many votes!  NOT
Suck it haters!  Accept defeat gracefully.  Your work has been outdone. Get over it.

Valkyrie90210

Just kidding, guys! I sincerely hope Gnash wins! Even though all of the entries are awesome!

Justin Lokey

May 05 2011

Whoa, nothing like a contest to get the comments a-flaming!

Voting closes next week, and I need to make a clarification (also added to the post above):

We experienced technical difficulties with the first voting system we posted, and were forced to take it down and replace it with a new system (Murphy’s Law, eh?). Those votes were recorded during the designated voting period, so they will be counted. Both poll totals will be added together to determine the winner. We apologize for any confusion this causes.

Iron Disciple

May 06 2011

Trikey will always be a joke.  Let’s face it, people voted for him only because he’s shiny and screams “Rawr! I’m a scary robot with big guns!  Pew pew pew!”

If this were an originality contest it never even would have made it to the finals and would have been left to rust on the scrap heap like all the other bots it was cloned from.

As for “Your work has been outdone.” See above, and realize that Trikey has not outdone anyone.  That thing was voted for because he’s the “cool” choice, not the right one.  It’s a good design on paper, but not for this game.

F. Zappa

May 06 2011

Iron Disciple - you posted all the right reasons but came to the wrong conclusion. People see “Rawr! I’m a scary robot with big guns!  Pew pew pew!” and vote for it exactly BECAUSE they want to see it in the game. Not because it’s well illustrated or because it’s big and shiny. This isn’t an originality contest or a beauty contest; it’s a contest to determine what players want to see in the game.

Based on the results thus far, it’s obvious that the majority of voters want to see Trikey in the game. You may not personally agree, but that fact alone makes Trikey right for this game.

Igor Sobolevsky

May 12 2011

Hey guys. It’s great to see my design as number one! But honestly, DON’T VOTE FOR ME! I’m not even an American citizen so if my design won, I couldn’t accept the prize.

Vote for Chopter or Gnash. Those really are better designs. I drew mine while I was high on rubber cement and stomping on the American flag.

Bridget

May 12 2011

As a close friend of Igor’s, I am SERIOUSLY offended that people are bringing the fact that his name is doesn’t sound American. AND are stooping so low as to pose as him or his supporters.

He IS an American citizen and he worked extremely hard on his design as I am sure all the other designers did. Honestly, you’re doing what Donald Trump was doing to Obama when he was demanding to see his birth certificate. Honestly it doesn’t matter if Obama or Igor was born in America, what they do with their work is what matters. You can bash the robot as much as you want, but when you start bringing up personal issues, it truly shows how immature, rude, and unprofessional you are.

If this says anything, vote for the robot that you like. Not because who made it.

James

May 12 2011

This has definitely been one heated competition. As the guy who drew Gnash, I want to thank everyone for the support. But I gotta agree with Bridget. Sure, personal attacks are just going to happen in online voting; but I just hope each entry can be graded on its own quality. Even though I’m in second right now; it’s still an honor to be one of the top five.

Bridget

May 12 2011

I am a moron. Sorry about what I said earlier. It actually does matter if the President is a natural born citizen. Seeing as how it’s in Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution. I was about to then say that the Constitution is an old document that doesn’t matter anymore, but then I realized that it allows me the freedom of speech. My apologies everyone; I’ll think before I write next time,

Bridget

May 12 2011

Fine. I’ll take the high road and not add fuel to the fire. But congratulations, James, Gnash is a great design and if you do win, I’m glad to see that you are a class act as well. May the best robot win.

Nadine

May 12 2011

I love how everyone is getting so bent out of shape over this. Obviously Trikey and Gnash are the heavy hitters in this competition. But to try to call someone out because their name is different is bullshit to say the least. Get over it. If he wins he wins because he has a good design and people liked it. Hence why they voted for it. But dont go bashing someone because of their name. How is it that Latisha or Qwandell are acceptable american names but Igor cant be? Immaturity at its best??? I think so. Igor my vote goes towards you.

Wendy

May 12 2011

Gotta rally for Gnash! All flaming aside, that design rules!

Stephan R.

May 12 2011

Gnash Britches! On name alone, that should win!

Nynex

May 13 2011

I hope even if Trikey wins you guys use Gnash Britches. He is obviously the best choice for the style of the game. Trikey looks too much like a Mech.
